Swain Middle School’s Local History Day Competition!
Swain Middle School is so proud of all our students who competed in this year’s Local History Day Competition! Their hard work and dedication to uncovering history was truly inspiring.
SMS would also like to congratulate the 11 students who have been selected to advance to the Regional Competition! We can’t wait to see them continue their journey and showcase their amazing projects.
Swain Middle School’s History Day program is being featured in a statewide promotional video for National History Day to highlight the incredible work being done here! With strong support from our administration, dedicated teachers, and passionate students exploring history that fuels their curiosity, our program is setting an example for schools across North Carolina.
We are so proud of every student who competed and represented our school so well!

Kindness Starts With You!
This week, let’s focus on controlling what we can control—our actions, our words, and our attitude. While we can’t always change what happens around us, we can choose to respond in a way that spreads kindness and positivity.
🌟Kindness Challenge: Control What You Can🌟
Each day, when faced with a frustrating or difficult situation, try one of these kindness-centered responses:
1️⃣ Take a Deep Breath & Stay Positive – Instead of reacting with frustration, pause, take a deep breath, and respond calmly.
2️⃣ Use Encouraging Words – Compliment someone, offer support, or simply say, "You're doing great!"
3️⃣ Walk Away from Negativity – If a situation is outside of your control, choose to step away rather than engage in negativity.
4️⃣ Be Patient & Understanding – If someone is having a tough day, choose to be patient instead of reacting with irritation.
5️⃣ Find a Solution Instead of Complaining – When something goes wrong, focus on what you can do to fix it rather than dwelling on the problem.
6️⃣ Set an Example – Show others how to handle tough situations with grace and kindness. Your attitude can inspire those around you!
7️⃣ Practice Gratitude – Write down three things you’re thankful for each day to shift your focus to the positive.

Finally we are back in action with the 2nd round of our SMC Middle School Conference Tournament. Your Maroon Devils will square of with Andrews in the late game of the night. Estimated game time start is 7:45. Come out and support.
This week, we’re shining a spotlight on the power of listening! One of the kindest things we can do is make others feel heard and valued, and it all starts with a simple conversation.
Here’s the challenge:
👉 Every morning, take 2 minutes to ask a classmate:
"What are you most excited about today?"
🎧 Practice active listening by giving them your full attention, showing interest in their response, and maybe even starting a meaningful conversation!
💡 Why it matters: Listening helps build trust, strengthens relationships, and creates a positive environment where everyone feels supported. Small acts of kindness like this can make a big impact on someone’s day.
Let’s work together to make this week extra special by listening, connecting, and spreading kindness throughout our school community!

Driver’s Ed: Attention 8th Graders! The Driver’s Ed 200 Question Exemption Test is your chance to fast-track your journey toward earning your driver’s license. The test will be held on February 6, 2025, at 3:15 PM in the Swain High School Media Center. To be eligible, students must be at least 14 1/2 years old by the date of the test. Registration is required and can be completed online at WNC Driving School by visiting wncdrivingschool.com. Don’t miss this opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and take a significant step toward becoming a licensed driver!
