Swain Middle School SHINES at North Carolina’s National History Day Competition!
Our students brought their best and then some and made HISTORY at the state level!
Madison Weston and Marissa Hammons wowed the judges with their powerful group exhibit!
Khloe Chapman earned the prestigious Women’s History Award—go Khloe!
Connor Walls and Levi Dunford crushed it with their project and won the 20th Century History Award!
AND… Elsie-Mae Clayton took 1st place overall in the Individual Exhibit category.
Elsie-Mae is heading to Washington, D.C. this June to represent North Carolina at the National History Day Finals!
We couldn’t be more proud of their hard work, passion, and excellence!
🌟 8th Grade Charleston Trip Highlights! 🌟
Our 8th grade students had an unforgettable time exploring Charleston, South Carolina! From the beach to Top Golf, Fort Sumter, the Charleston Market, and so many other adventures, the trip was packed with fun, learning, and lasting memories.
Even more impressive than the sights was the way our students represented Swain Middle School—with respect and pride. They received multiple compliments from community members for their outstanding behavior, and we couldn’t be prouder.
This trip was a celebration of their hard work, and they absolutely earned every moment. Way to go 8th Grade!

Big shout out and heartfelt thanks to our amazing Drama and Spirit Clubs for their hard work on this year’s Service Learning Day!
The Spirit Club designed and built the set for our school’s production of Freaky Friday, and the Drama Club brought it to life with an energetic and memorable performance. Their collaboration was a true showcase of talent and teamwork!
Even better, today, the proceeds from the play were donated to our local theater — a meaningful way to give back to the arts in our community.
We’re so proud of everyone involved. Great job! You truly make SMS proud!

What an incredible day at the 2nd Annual Swain Middle School STEAM Expo! Yesterday, Swain Middle School was buzzing with curiosity, creativity, and community as students explored hands-on activities and career opportunities alongside partners from across Western North Carolina.
From creating dyes with local plants to launching catapults, packing for the moon, exploring fish anatomy, playing student-designed video games, and even watching glassblowing and blacksmithing demos—our students got a real-world glimpse into the amazing futures that await them.
A huge shoutout to the GEAR UP program for organizing and setting up this incredible event—we couldn’t have done it without you!
A big THANK YOU as well to our amazing partners from App State, WCU, UNCA, SCC, AB-Tech, the Museum of the Cherokee People, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Roper Mountain Science Center, and many more for making this day unforgettable. Swain Middle is proud to connect learning with opportunity—and we can’t wait to do it all again next year!

Today is National School Secretary Day, and we want to recognize the incredible heart and hard work of Mrs. Kathy!
