Swain County Schools is excited to invite families, educators, and community members to a historic milestone for the district: the official groundbreaking ceremony for the brand-new Swain Middle School.

The ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 29, at 1:00 PM at the project site located between Black HIll Road and Fontana Road. The site is accessible at 414 Black Hill Road.

The new facility represents a transformative investment in the future of Swain County youth. Funded in part by a major $52 million Needs-Based Public School Capital Fund grant awarded by the state, the modern campus is designed to elevate the educational experience for generations of middle school students.

The comprehensive project will feature state-of-the-art academic wings, an expanded cafeteria, a modern gymnasium, and an administration suite. Built to replace the aging current facility, the new design integrates campus spaces to reduce student transition times, maximize instructional time, and expand opportunities for extracurricular and career-technical engagement.

Recently, the Swain County Board of Education officially approved the construction bid packages, keeping the project on an aggressive timeline. Construction is slated to occur in a single phase over approximately 20 months.

“This groundbreaking ceremony marks the culmination of years of vision, planning, and community advocacy,” said Dr. Brandon Sutton, Swain County Schools Superintendent. “We are immensely grateful to our state leaders, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, former school administration, and our local community for helping us turn this vision into reality. This new school will provide our students and teachers with the world-class learning environment they deserve.”

Members of the public, local dignitaries, alumni, and school families are all encouraged to attend the ceremony to celebrate the beginning of construction and look ahead to a bright future for Swain County education.
