We are excited to inform you about important changes to our student information system that will enhance our ability to serve your children better. As part of a statewide initiative, Swain County Schools has implemented a new Student Information System (SIS) called Infinite Campus.
This modernization brings several improvements, but it also requires some adjustments in how we manage student data, particularly attendance. Here's what you need to know:
New Attendance Calculation Method
Our new system calculates attendance based on the actual minutes a student spends in school. This more precise method ensures we accurately track instructional time for each student.
Key Points:
Attendance is now measured in minutes rather than half-day increments.
The school day's length is based on start and end times, excluding lunch and transitions.
Students must be present for at least half of the instructional day to be marked present.
What This Means for You:
To simplify this change for families, we've established the following guidelines:
Students will be counted present if they:
Check-in by 11:00 AM and stay for the remainder of the regular school day, or
Arrive at the start of the school day and check out no earlier than 12:00 PM (noon).
Please note that students who arrive late and leave early on the same day may be marked absent if they don't have enough instructional minutes.
Our Commitment to You
We understand that these changes may require some adjustment. Rest assured that our goal is to provide your children with the best educational experience while maintaining accurate records. We appreciate your patience and support as we navigate this transition together.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact Sherry Wright (SIS Coordinator) or Karen Cook (Swain County Schools Technology Director).
